Who We Are

Liz King – sopranoLiz was born and schooled in Johannesburg. She sings in the choir of St George’s, Parktown and as she says “has sung at weddings, funerals and barmitzvahs” for many years. She has a weekly musical programme on Radio Today, is a retired landscaper, loves her garden, reads, walks, plays bridge and loves to travel which, together with her husband, she does quite often. She is married to Mervyn King, has two sons, and four grandchildren. |

Cora Hoexter – altoCora Hoexter is a Professor in the School of Law at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. She has enjoyed singing all her life, and has been with a number of choirs. She taught at the University of Natal (PMB) for several years, during which time she was a member of the Natal University Madrigal Singers directed by Michael Lambert. Cora joined St George’s, Parktown, ten years ago and still sings with the St George’s choir occasionally. Cora’s interests include music, food, the cinema and travel. She is married to James van den Heever and they have a son, Julian, aged 16. |

Roy Hobson – tenorRoy was born and raised in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, and has been living in Johannesburg for the past 10 years. He has been singing since he was a boy treble in the Kingswood College Chapel Choir, amongst others with the Rhodes University Chamber Choir, Natural Born Singers, Johannesburg Bach Choir, InVerse, and the St George’s Parktown choir. He led Natural Born Singers on successful tours to the Grahamstown Arts Festival, and cut a CD “Now Hear This” with them. He has in the past been South African ambassador for the Contemporary A Cappella Society. Roy obtained his BSc Honours in Computer Science from Rhodes, and has been running a software development business for the past 10 years. His other interests include gardening, movies and road running. He is married to Megan, and they have two daughters, Jodi and Nina. |

Paul Spies – bassPaul has been singing in the bath since he was little. As a boy he sang both in the school choir and at St George’s Church, Parktown. He then studied finance at UCT where he sang at St George’s Cathedral, Cape Town. On moving back up to the big city, he sang for some years with the SABC Choir. More recently he has rejoined the choir of St George’s, Parktown where he now sings regularly. He is an actor and his interests include music, bridge, poker, and the occasional infuriating game of golf. |
